It’s Saturday. The day you wait for each week. You whip out pen, paper, and your favorite cookbooks. Soon hours seem like minutes as you orchestrate the most magnificent of grocery lists, almost rivaling the skills of Mozart and his symphonies. Every item needed is listed in order of grocery store layout, color coded by section, and then printed on an excel spreadsheet. Once you are properly quaffed and ready, you can finally head off to the store. Leisurely walking down the aisles, your time is spent evaluating food items, picking up containers while reading every single ingredient on each label, and deciding on which product is best for your meal. It’s bliss, shear bliss. Long check out lines don’t matter because you enjoy the hustle and bustle of the super market, bright and fun labels as you pass them on the shelves, and reading the latest gossip magazines while you unload your cart full of yummy goodness on the counter. Who could imagine spending a Saturday any other way?Yeah, nothing like that happens over here. As a mother of five crazy and spirited kids I’m lucky if I can find a semi respectable piece of coloring book paper to scribble out items we have been desperately out of and needing, let alone whip out my cook books and type out a grocery list. Shoot, just thinking about trips to the store give me a headache. So when I finally make it to the store, it’s game on. While I would love to have all of the time in the world to read every single label of each item I place in my cart, that’s just not an option. Seriously, I’m lucky if I end up getting everything I needed on my list, ha! The grocery store is more of a battle zone when you have 5 kids, than a retreat it might be for others.
That’s why I was excited to see the Grocery Manufacturers Association’s Facts Up Front campaign. This helps consumers make informed choices by putting key information from the Nutrition Facts Panel on the front of the package. These labels are prevalent in grocery stores and they really make all the difference for my family! So when I only have a limited amount of time to get all I need, but still desire to help my family make healthful decisions, I just look for Facts Up Front! But don’t take my word for it, you too can go to the Facts Up Front website to find resources for you to make more informed/healthful decisions with your diet, learn more about the label, and even how to read it.
I’ve got these kids to take care of and their wellness isn’t something I want to just settle for. In fact, have you seen the awesome Nutrition Calculator?! It easily helps people determine their estimated daily nutrient needs for themselves and their family members in order to maintain a wholesome diet and weight. By submitting five simple questions, the calculator provides caloric intake, along with the suggested amounts of daily nutrients needed for each day, including fiber, protein and Vitamin C.
So tell me, have you heard about Facts Up Front?!
Do you like those labels displayed on the product packages?!

I have heard about this but haven’t noticed it yet at the stores. I think its a great campaign.
I’d not heard of this before! Thanks for sharing. (=
It’s a step in the right direction. However, I’d like to see hydrogenated oils (trans fats) labeled more clearly, as well as artificial ingredients like colors. Hopefully that will come eventually. Every step is a step in the right direction!
I’ve never heard of this – but LOVE the idea. Don’t make me think is my style!
I haven’t head of Facts up Front, but I HAVE been buying products with this labeling! So I guess I *have* heard of it in some way! I love it because the nutritional information they feature on the front acts as a guide for me when I’m trying to pick out Weight Watcher’s-friendly foods.
Also, you’re killing me with your “grocery store is a battleground” story…I only have two kids and I feel the same way! lol!
