It’s the MOST wonderful time of the year; filled with caroling in the snow ice (if you live in Texas this past week, ha!), drinking hot chocolate, shopping for presents, and spending time with your loved one. I LOVE this time of year, don’t you?! But one thing this season has been known to be filled with is excess. It’s easy to want and use more during the holidays because everything looks so bright, shiny, and you MUST have the newest thing! I want to help my children see that while these things are grand and wonderful, there are some small ways to go green during the holiday season. They are the future of the world and what we teach them to do now matters! New Leaf Energy has asked us to show ways to teach our kids to go green, so here are three ways to to do just that at Christmas!
1. Recycle wrapping paper – I LOVE wrapping paper and could stand in the aisles of Target for hours just gawking at all of the choices. But what happens to your paper once the presents are unwrapped?! We usually just throw ours away. Instead of that, try recycling it. Wrapping someone else’s gift in that paper, letting your children create artwork out of it, or even design fun costumes out of used paper for your kids to play in?! (We certainly love that idea around here!)
2. Donate old toys to resell shops – As the kids are gifted new toys at Christmas, we really see how much they have and truly don’t play with. So we make a rule that when a new toy comes in, one has to go. We can even take these toys to a resell shop so other can have and enjoy them! Don’t just throw them out!
3. Set your lights on a timer – Christmas lights are our favorite! Do you get sucked in and mesmerized by their beauty like we do?! Well when you hang your lights, set them on a timer. This way you don’t leave them on for extended amounts of time. What a money and energy saver right there! And I LOVE anything that makes my life easier and I don’t have to try and daily remember to do, ha!
These are just 3 easy ways to help set an example for your children and go green! Do you have other ways you go green for the Holidays?!
How do you encourage your kids to do the same?!
