When I was in 4th grade I received the BEST Valentine’s Day gift EVER!
I still remember waking up that morning and as my sisters and I ran out of our rooms to see what our parents had gotten us, I focused in on it. Those soft floppy ears, precious white paws, and big droopy eyes. Really it was love at first sight. He was my puppy.
With the recent changes we endured like a big family move and loss of my great grandmother two months earlier, I need a companion. The security. The love.
When it came to deciding on his name, it seemed pretty simple. I had just recently watched one of my favorite movies (ha!) and one of the characters stuck out in my mind.
For you my sweet puppy were destined to be named Wild Thing. Perfection. Especially since he always seemed to be dressed in a clown costume. Sorry Bud.
And let me just say, if you think your dog is perfect, I would have to beg to differ! Wild Thing was always by my side. He slept with me every night. Traveled So well, never had an accident (a miracle, I know), and was the apple of my eye.
As I graduated from high school and headed off to college, I wondered if I would be allowed to take Wild Thing with me. What would my roommates say? I knew they would fall in love with him too, but would he be an issue for them? Thankfully, he blended into college life quite well. And of course all the ladies loved him. Such a ladies man. (I think it was the clown costume, that did it for them.)
Naively, I figured once I got married I could bring Wild Thing along too. But my husband was not a fan of him sleeping in our bed, and Wild Thing was not a fan of all his lost attention. So with a broken heart I had to let him go. It was truly tragic. This dog had been there through many of my ups and downs…and now he was gone.
Though the transition was rough, each day seemed to be less hard than the day before. Soon Wild Thing was a distant memory, one my kids would never know of. How could they not know of my long lost pal?!
That’s why today I’m bringing him back. He was too good to be forgotten.
Wild Thing you are in our hearts forever!
