Hi, my name is Stephanie Park (Brittany’s sister) and I’m addicted to DIY projects! It’s true, I confess. I LOVE the shabby chic look, but as my momma says, “Shabby chic don’t come cheap!” So, I became one of those girls who sifts through flea markets for hidden treasures. Luckily, for this project, I only had to sift through my closet, and boy did I come up with a treasure, my husband’s old toy chest! Today I wanted to show you how I turned it into a shabby chic storage ottoman!
What you’ll need:
*chest/old suitcase
*velcro strips
*board
*Foam
*fabric
*spray paint
*Staple gun
*measuring tape
*box knife
*sandpaper
*gorilla glue
Spray paint the chest! (hardware and all)
Attach velcro to the bottom of your board (we used a cheap hard board from Lowe’s that they cut to size for us). When you lay the board down, press against the chest; this will attach the matching velcro strip to the chest, and the velcro strips will be perfectly aligned.
Remove the board and glue your foam to the top of the board. Make sure the foam is cut to fit the measurements of the board. (Luckily ours didn’t need cutting.)
Lay fabric down and flip the board over foam side down onto the fabric. Pull fabric tight and staple into the board about 1-2 inches from the edge.
Reattach the board by matching up the velcro strips and scuff the hardware with your sandpaper as desired.
This shabby chic storage ottoman was just the pop of color my living room needed! And with the removable cushion, we can switch out fabric whenever we want. Now, what to do with all the savings?! I think I feel another project coming…
Project cost: $35
Retail Value: $100-$150
Savings: $65-$115

Very cool! I love it and it looks super easy!
What a cool idea! The Mr and I both have trunks from our college days and this would be a great way to repurpose them.
You are so darn talented. I have so many creative ideas, just not confidence to get started on something this crafty. Well done.
