Here’s the deal. When it comes to parenting I am no professional. It may seem like a woman with 4 almost 5 children should have her act together and be able to write a book on her plethora of knowledge. This is not so, my friend. If I were to ever write a book it might contain a list of all the things I’ve tried an failed. Now that list would be plenty…and quite humorous I might add. But there are a few mistakes I have learned from and feel the need to share with you too. So head from my warnings and follow my new found wisdom. Ha!
It’s simple really. There are just a few things you should know before you can enjoy a summer of toddler pool fun. So I have compiled a list of a few dos and don’ts to help you bypass all the headaches and go straight into the fun part! Because summers with toddlers are a blast, but these little ankle biters can keeps us on our toes if we don’t come prepared!
1. Don’t let your toddler swim in a pool with a disposable diaper on. Now on first hand that idea might not sound so bad, especially when you think about the fact that those babies are loaded with presents from your children all the time, and they keep it locked up tight. But the problem is that these diapers soak up that pool water likes nobody’s business and soon your child’s drawers will be dragging to the floor. Not to mention the lovely gooey, gelatin mixture that begins to ooze from the seems of the diaper as it explodes. Really, it’s a pretty sight.
2. Do make sure your toddler is safe at all times. Whether you have floaties on them or are constantly beside them, kids need a lot of attention around water. You never know when they might slip or trip and fall in choking. Or if you’re like my kids, they seem to get hurt more outside of the water than in it. Mainly because they walk/run around and bust their tale on the ground. It’s just better to be safe than sorry. I’d like to keep these rugrats around as long as possible.
3. Don’t let your child swim bare booty….or at least do it at your own risk. Now I don’t necessarily mean completely naked, more so I mean without any protection in the diapered region…if you catch my drift. The trend nowadays is to let our child run free with the wind, and while I am all for that I am more pro them running free when they have control over certain bodily functions. I’ve been known to be a little gutsy before, allowing my children to go without, and wouldn’t you know it, that’s when they feel the need to leave me a gift of gratitude in the water. Boy isn’t that pleasant. So feel free to let them party in their birthday suit, but be prepared to deal with the candy coated goodness that comes along with it.
4. Don’t let your child drink the pool water. Oh it’s just water, what harm could it do? See #3 above and need I say more?! You don’t know where that water’s been. Shoot, I know where my children have been and STILL wouldn’t allow it. Sick nasty folks, sick nasty.
5. Do put your toddlers in Huggies Swimmers for pool time! These babies are perfect for swimming! They keep what needs to stay in (if you know what I mean) inside with their built in leak guards, and keeps water from soaking and sagging because they are absorbent but don’t swell. Also, I love that they slide on for wearing, but you can just tear the swimmer down the sides when it’s time to take it off. Plus they have such fun colors and patterns the kids love them!
I mean really, how cute is this little beauty in her Huggies Swimmers?!
But wait! If you head out to Target right now like I did and get your little ones some Huggies Swimmers, you can use this coupon and save $1.50! Now that’s what I’m talking about!
So now that you’re all set for swim time, can you think of any other dos and don’ts to add to my list?!

Totally Pinning! Excellent tips and pointers.
Love the photos and the tips…I too had decided it was ok one time to let them swim in their diaper for a little bit. I couldn’t even get her out of the water because it was so full. Thanks to Huggies Swimmers I keep them in the car all summer for those just-in-case-moments!
Such a good idea! I should leave some in our car too!
Oh my gosh, the censored photo is HILARIOUS but SO TRUE! We love Huggies Little Swimmers… use them all the time! 🙂
Right?! And it’s the WORST feeling in the world when you find a situation like that, ha!
A must have for sure! We let my daughter sit in the lake in her regular diaper on vacation and the diaper was DISGUSTING. The gel grosses me out and then it’s in their parts and that’s not fun for anyone.
It’s that so nasty?!
haha! good list! i love her side cut out suit! we use little swimmers too!
1st – OMGoodness! LOVE the glasses. 🙂
2nd – You covered so many great tips. My addition? Sunblock… and plenty of it.
She has not taken those glasses off since we saw Monsters University last week! Like she wears them EVERYWHERE, ha! And I CANNOT believe I forgot about sunblock! Oops!
Great tips!
Don’t drink the pool water! Words to live by.
Right?!?!
Yes, huggies swimmie diapers are the best!
