The sun shown down on those precious plump cheeks as she watched her siblings down playing in the yard. Penelope gazed on them wishing she could be there too. The only thing that stood in between her and the blessed green grass were two steps. Why were they so hard? As she lay on her tummy, toes stretched as far as they could reach, she hung from the step too scared of the unknown.
Would she fall?
Was there in fact ground below her?
Soon the strain on her face turned into defeat as the weight of the fear crushed her desire to make it to the yard. Penelope pulled herself up, turned around, and sat watching everyone else play. There she was, defeated but perfectly content with sitting on the porch. Little did she know that had she just let go and dropped, her toes were only 2-3 inches from the ground. What we all knew, and encouraged her to do, was far too great because she couldn’t see it for herself.
Can I tell you that at times I am like my sweet little baby sitting on the comfortable porch, because stepping off into the unknown scares the tar out of me. Yes, it’s true. Instead of stepping out in faith to what God has called me to do, I sit crippled by the fear. In that moment it’s too much for me to just take the step and drop. Even though I’ll only be falling safe into His arms…right where I belong. But if you trust that even though we can’t see those 2-3 inches, we know our God is faithful, the blessings incredible if you let go.
“For we live by faith, not by sight. ” 2 Corinthians 5:7 (NIV)
Did you know that God calls us to do things that we don’t feel equipped or ready for at all? But HE is! And when He calls us we may not most of the time know when or how we are to arrive at said purpose. But GOD does! He just needs us willing and ready to step.
“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess,
for He who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23 (NIV)
Friend, are you willing to take that step? Or are you like Penelope and I and often find yourself grasping with white knuckles on to the known, the things we can control? One of my family’s favorite sayings growing up was,
And that is so true friend.
So let go of that porch and cling to God’s word. I know I need too. For there is no sweeter place than in His arms.

Love this so much, friend. My daughter has Live by Faith tattooed on her foot. Some people wonder about me letting a 16 year old get a tattoo on her foot, but it’s a constant reminder of her commitment. She too was that hesitant little girl, afraid to take steps that had the potential to open doors to her because she was over-cautious, and yet now, at nearly 17 she is taking cautiously big steps in her walk of faith.
Great post, girl, seriously! I think we’ve all been there!
I really needed this today. Thank you so much for posting it.
