Let’s be honest.
Today I am a HOT MESS.
I’m remembering the events of this day 6 years ago, and the flood gates of tears have sprung open. It is still really hard for me to grasp that my baby is SIX years old today?! How does this even happen? There is something about your oldest (and youngest), that takes awhile for you to adjust to when they reach a new milestone.
How can I be a mother to a SIX year old…in kindergarten.
Not possible.
But alas, he keeps growing up and his sweet baby characteristics are fading into handsome little boy features. Just to set the record straight…he is doing all of this WITHOUT my permission. One night I even told him that I was going to start going into his room while he sleeps and giving him some “Stay Little” drops so he couldn’t grow anymore. Apparently they taste like broccoli…he wasn’t a fan. 🙁
So in honor of the boy who made me a mother, here is how it all happened!
………………………………………..
(this is your obligatory TMI alert…you’ve been warned, ha!)
Monday September 11th, I had my 40wk doctor’s appointment only to learn there had been no change. Like the heavily pregnant, overly hormonal lady I was, I began hysterically crying because I was pretty certain the kid would never come.
That night life carried on as usual and I somehow managed to forget about this stubborn little child holding my uterus hostage. All of the sudden at 4:30 in the morning I was awakened with what seemed to be a physical and audible “POP”, then a warm, wet sensation followed. Slightly freaking out, I smacked Sam and said,
“Either I wet the bed, or my water just broke.”
He sweetly said, “WELL, WHICH ONE IS IT??”
“I don’t know, let me go to the bathroom and find out!”
After taking a few minutes in the restroom it was clear my water had broken. I yelled to Sam that my water had actually broken and we needed to head to the hospital. All of the sudden I hear a, “AAAHHHH!!!!”.
“Sam, what happened??”
“I just rolled out of the bed…into your wet spot!”
“What?! I told you it was there!”
“I was halfway asleep, of course I didn’t remember!”
While everyone rushed to get things ready to go, I just sat on the toilet…it seemed like the logical place to be. And then, underestimating the amount of water leakage that occurs, I ingeniously put a feminine liner on and grabbed a towel for the road. Our car ride seemed like to take forever as I began to feel the oh so pleasant contractions. Then once we arrived at the hospital I noticed the entire front of my pants were soaked! Whateves, I totally rocked that look!
When we approached the lady at the maternity labor and delivery observation desk, she asked why I was there. Um, I don’t know…kind of thought it was a good idea to take a tour of the building at 5:00 in the morning! ha!
I told her my water had broken in my sleep and then pulled the towel away from my soaked pants.
“Why yes it has. Head on back to observation.”
There was another nurse down the hall waiting from me and as her eyes focused in on my ever expanding wet ring, she informed me that I needed to head straight to Labor & Delivery. I passed what she referred to as the P.P.S. test….Positive Pants Screen. haha!
Then the waiting began…
Through 12 hours of labor, including two near trips to the OR for an emergency c-section due to Ethan’s drops in heart rate…
…45 minutes of pushing, and a broken collar bone…
At 4:39 pm on Tuesday September 12th, Ethan Edward Estes made his debut in this world!
I LOVE this little boy with my WHOLE heart, and I am SO thankful to our Lord for letting me be his mother.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MY LOVE!

Happy Birthday to your baby boy! Such a beautiful story! It amazes me everyday how fast they grow and grow.
Awe, what a touching birth story, the years fly by so fast! My labor/delivery with Marley was almost identical to yours with Ethan… except for the broken collarbone … how the heck did that happen?! -Tessa
I’m crying. That was the sweetest, most loving birth story I’ve read in a long time. I love the part about Sam saying: “Well, which is it…” That is something my husband would have said…if my water had broke. And, why do nurses ask you dumb questions like that when they know good and well why you are there. I am sure you were starting to “waddle” and they just have to realize. Ohhh Emmm Geee!
Happy Birthday little guy!!!!
And, that had to be awful with the broken collar bone. 🙁
Crying…man that seems like such a short time ago, yet so long ago too…wish I could go back and redo already!
Awe!! Happy Birthday Ethan!! Enjoyed the story, I love that you can remember it.
