A tutorial…
When I was finding decorations for Paisley’s birthday party, I went to one of my favorite websites…Etsy!
That place has EVERYTHING and often I like to just look on there to get ideas for craft projects.
I came across many paper garlands, which I fell in love with, BUT I wasn’t going to pay $30 plus dollars to have them made for me. That’s when the wheels in my head started turning!
And the Colorful Hymnal Garland idea was born.
It’s easy, cheap, and idiot proof. (I especially like the last one…I need idiot proof! haha!)
Here is what you need:
* hymnal (or just print off some hymns)
* clear string
* pencil
* bowls
* sewing needle
* food coloring (that day I had trouble finding some so I used Easter egg coloring)
* hot glue gun and glue (not pictured because it was added later.)
And now the fun part!!!
Step 1:
Trace out circles using the bowl as your guide.
I used both sides of the bowl so I could have two different sizes of hymns.
Here are your pretty circles!
Step 2:
Set up your dye.
I put the little colored egg containers in front of each color because my bowls made it hard to see which dye was in which bowl.
Lay out a towel to let the hymns dry.
Step 3:
Dye each circle.
For mine, I dyed 6 large circles and 7 small circles in each color.
(I forgot to take pictures of this part…with my hands being in dye and all.)
As I lay down each circle I crumpled it to add texture.
Step 4:
Let them dry.
Then stack them…if you like. 😉
Don’t be alarmed if your fingers look like this.
It’s completely normal and will only last a day…or two…or three, ha!
*This is a good reason to wear gloves!*
Step 5:
Arrange your circles in a line like you want displayed on your string.
Step 6:
Then thread the string through the needle and string your line of circles.
Step 7:
Space the colored circle groups where there is clear string in between each set of circles.
Then add a dot of glue to each side if the grouped circles.
This way once the garland is hanging it won’t lump together.
Let dry…which only takes about a minute.
Step 8:
Knot off the string on either end and hang!
(here’s a bad picture of the garland actually hanging, but you get the idea.)
And there you have it ladies and gentlemen!
Be sure to add this to your next event and you will be a hit!
You could even be like me and hang it in your daughter’s room once the party is over. 😉

Thanks for the tutorial! It is super cute!! You did such a fabulous job on Paisley’s party.
