That is the question. I hate to get all “McBeth” on you, but my husband and I have been arguing pleasantly discussing a topic having to do with our daughter. So without getting into all of the gory details, I’ll make it simple for you.
Here’s the facts:
We have a daughter.
A pretty cute one at that.
She is six moths old. (I still can’t believe it!)
She has two ears…yes just two, shocker I know. haha!
…..Here’s where the debate comes in……
Should we pierce her ears now?
Or should we wait until she is older?

Now that you are all up to speed, let’s talk about today.
Sam and I were sitting around the living room and I brought up the topic about getting Paisley’s ears pierce. I wanted us to come to an agreement and stick with it. That way we could place that parenting decision in a folder and file it away in our “Guide to Raising Our Children” cabinet. (note: this is not a real cabinet…yes, you’re welcome.) Simple, huh? Not so much.
Instead it went like this…

In the blue corner weighing approximately 200 pounds, 6 feet tall, and ready to fight is…..Samuel Estes!!
His opponent for the night is the undefeated champion (yeah right, haha) in the red corner weighing approximately *ahem* pounds, 5.6 feet tall, and looking for a quick win……..Brittany Estes!!!!
At the sound of the bell Round 1 will begin. Let’s keep the fight clean.
ding, ding, ding.
Brittany comes in with a quick upper cut, Sam stumbles. Then Brittany gives him the good ‘ole jab, jab, punch and Sam drops to the ground and down for the count.
10…..9…..8…..7…..6…..5…..4…..3…..2…..1
ding, ding, ding
Brittany wins the fight!

Okay, so maybe I’m exaggerating a little…or a lot. But one thing was for sure is that we stood on the opposite sides of the fence when it came to deciding when our daughter should get her ears pierced.
What I thought:
I had mine pierced when I was 2 months old, because my mom thought they were cute, she wanted them done so I wouldn’t remember the pain, and they would heal without me messing with them. Naturally, pierced ears aren’t a big deal to me…I LOVE them on baby girls and I see the benefits of getting them done at a young age. PLUS it’s not like the piercing is permanent, so if my daughter desires it can be reversed, haha! (somehow I feel like we just went from ear piercing to vasectomies…yes I am that crazy.) Our “rite of passage” as a girl in my home was when we were in 7th grade my mom took us to Dillards, we had a makeover, and then we were able to wear light make up. So that is special to me, you know.
Sam’s view:
He grew up where the girls in his family had to wait until they were 12 or 13 to get their ears pierced. This was their “rite of passage” and that was/is a big deal to them. The girls could make the decision on whether they wanted to get their ears pierced and were able to clean them on their own. (all good points)
I see where he is coming from. It’s hard to change things when you grew up with it as a tradition in your family. Where does the compromise come in?
That leads me to Facebook. Yep the social media hub, genius! I decided to ask my fellow Facebook friends what their opinions on the issue at hand was.
Shockingly I had 17 responses…people meant business, and I was ever so grateful to hear everyone’s thoughts!
“If I had a daughter, I would let her get her ears pierced when she’s old enough to take care of them…(put on cleaner & turn posts); probably around 7 or 8.” –MD
“We did Marley’s at 3 months. We knew we wanted them done and decided to do it before she would realize they were there to play with them and possibly get them infected. When we got them done, she cried for 5 seconds and it was over. To this day she has never touched them and they healed very nicely.” –TH
“We didn’t let tori get hers done until her 11th birthday. She had asked quite a few times years early but her reason was because her friends had theirs pierced. We wanted to make sure she wanted it & that she could be responsible with keeping up with her earrings. I didn’t want to be buying one pair after another. I find it a bit refreshing you’re asking about ears. Now days, one might be asking the right age for their daughter to get her belly button, lip, eyebrow , or tongue pierced!!” –KS (died laughing on that one!)
“I had to get my ears pierced THREE separate times. Once when I was 5, 9, and 15. Yes, 15! My long hair and shampoo kept irritating my ears, and then they would get infected and I would have to let them grow in again. NOT FUN. If I had to do it over again, I would’ve wanted to get them pierced when I was a baby so that they would have less chance of getting infected and a whole lot less pain.” –LS

It was now up to us as her parents to make that decision.
And we did.

I’m guessing you won. 🙂 Just feel like as a woman, you have more of a say, and at the end of the day, probably care more than Sam does. Well, maybe not, but I know I usually care more about stuff like that than Josh does. haha! If you got them pierced, we need to see pictures!
